Late Cretaceous, 67 Million Years Old

Name: Nanotryannus

Type: Carnivore

Size: 5 meters in length.

Nanotyrannus, meaning 'dwarf tyrant,' is a contested genus of tyrannosaurid dinosaur, often interpreted as a juvenile Tyrannosaurus specimen and known primarily from a small skull dating from approximately 72.1 to 66 million years ago. Distinguishing features include a greater number of teeth in both the upper and lower jaws compared to mature Tyrannosaurus rex individuals, along with fused cranial bones. Specifically, Nanotyrannus exhibited 14–15 teeth per side in the maxilla and 16 per side in the lower jaw, whereas T. rex showed 11–12 upper and 11–14 lower tooth positions. These theropods likely engaged in cooperative hunting behaviors, preying on sizable Late Cretaceous fauna such as ceratopsians and hadrosaurs.
