Abelisauridae, meaning "Abel's lizards," represent a clade of ceratosaurian theropods that flourished during the Cretaceous period, commonly referred to as the Kem Kem Abelisaur. The genus Abelisaurus, established by Argentine paleontologists in 1985, marks the first described member of this carnivorous theropod group. Predominantly found across southern continents such as South America and Africa, Abelisaurus is characterized as a medium to large theropod. Analysis of fossil remains from Morocco suggests these dinosaurs weighed approximately 2,000 kilograms. They are considered basal members of the clade and coexisted with other notable large theropods of the era, including Carcharodontosaurus and Spinosaurus.
