100 - 66 Million Years old, Upper Cretaceous, Maastrichtian Epoch.

Name: Prognathodon

Type: Carnivore

Size: 6 to 14 meters in length

Prognathodon, an extinct marine lizard within the mosasaur family, inhabited the seas during the Cretaceous period, approximately 100 to 66 million years ago. Distinguished by a robust and powerful jaw, this predator excelled in preying upon hard-shelled creatures such as ammonites, turtles, and shellfish. Its teeth, exhibiting fine serrations, were expertly adapted for crushing and slicing its prey. A notable anatomical characteristic of Prognathodon is the presence of sclerotic rings across all species of the genus, which played a crucial role in preserving the corneal shape and supporting the sclera. Additionally, Prognathodon is set apart from other mosasaurs by possessing a reduced number of teeth.

Please be aware of the nature of fossils:

Being buried under the ground for millions of years under tons of pressure tends to be rough. No fossil comes out of the ground whole and perfect. Most fossils have undergone some restoration, while others are altered by man simply to enhance their presentation in different ways. The workers in Morocco do a very professional job of unearthing and preserving these natural treasures; however, commonly, natural cracks are visible on the surface. These are part of the natural beauty of the fossil and are not considered defects.
