Name: Prognathodon

Prognathodon is a type of extinct marine lizard from the mosasaur family that existed during the Cretaceous period, approximately 100 to 66 million years ago. Known for its robust and heavy jaw, Prognathodon was a skilled predator with powerful jaw muscles and specialized in consuming hard-shelled prey like ammonites, turtles, and shellfish. Their teeth were specifically designed for crushing and shearing the flesh of their prey, with visible serrations upon inspection. One unique feature of Prognathodon is its sclerotic rings, found in all species of the genus, which helped maintain the shape of its cornea and supported its scelra. Unlike other mosasaurs, Prognathodon has a smaller number of teeth, making it distinct among its kind.
