Anzu Wyliei, commonly known as the “chicken from hell,” is a species of dinosaur that belongs to the theropod group called oviraptorosaurs. It lived during the late Cretaceous period, approximately 66 million years ago. The discovery of Anzu wyliei has provided valuable insights into the diversity and evolution of dinosaurs during this time.

Anzu wyliei was first described in 2014 based on three partial skeletons found in the Hell Creek Formation of North and South Dakota, United States. These fossils were excavated from rocks that were deposited in a floodplain environment, offering a glimpse into the ancient ecosystem where this dinosaur thrived.

This dinosaur was named “Anzu” after a bird-like demon from Mesopotamian mythology, and “wyliei” honors Wylie J. Tuttle, the grandson of a benefactor who supported paleontological research. Anzu wyliei was a large dinosaur, estimated to have reached lengths of up to 3.5 meters (11.5 feet) and weighed around 200 kilograms (440 pounds). It had a unique appearance with a beak-like snout, a crest on its head, long arms with sharp claws, and feathers covering its body.

The discovery of Anzu wyliei has shed light on the behavior and diet of oviraptorosaurs. Analysis of its anatomy suggests that it was likely an omnivorous dinosaur, feeding on both plant material and small animals. Its beak-like snout and robust jaws indicate adaptations for processing tough vegetation, while its sharp claws suggest it could capture small prey.
