Oligocene Age 50 million years ago

The Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia) is a genus that dates all the way back to the age of dinosaur it is related to the California Redwoods and was thought to be extinct until living specimens were discovered in central China in 1944. First called a “fossil tree” because it was believed extinct, this fast growing tree is now a favorite ornamental tree. It was (and is) a deciduous conifer.  Today’s Metasequoia has a full pyramidal shape, grows to 120′ high.

Please be aware of the nature of fossils:

Being buried under the ground for millions of years under tons of pressure tends to be rough. No fossil comes out of the ground whole and perfect. Most fossils have undergone some restoration, while others are altered by man simply to enhance their presentation in different ways. These are part of the natural beauty of the fossil and not considered defects.
