Name: Maiasaura

Type: Herbivore

Size: 9 meters in length.

Maiasaura is one of the most famous duck-billed dinosaurs from the Late Cretaceous, known not only for its size but also for groundbreaking discoveries related to dinosaur parenting behavior. In 1978, a remarkable nesting colony was uncovered in the Two Medicine Formation near Choteau, revealing nests, eggs, and juvenile fossils that transformed scientific understanding of dinosaur family life.

This large herbivore measured up to eight meters long and weighed approximately four metric tons as an adult. Its broad toothless beak allowed it to crop plants efficiently, while hundreds of closely packed teeth formed powerful chewing surfaces capable of processing tough vegetation. A small crest between the eyes and a long, pointed tail gave Maiasaura a distinctive appearance among hadrosaur dinosaurs.

Maiasaura’s body structure suggests flexible movement, with strong hind limbs enabling bipedal locomotion while also allowing stable movement on all fours. Rapid growth rates indicate that individuals reached full size within seven to eight years, supporting the idea of active, social herds that thrived in Late Cretaceous ecosystems.
